ABSTRACT

Two of the largest bays on the west coast of Turkey, Izmir Bay and Gulluk Bay, are the focus for ongoing research involving the Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology of Dokuz Eylul University. Especially, in Izmir, due to intense residential, commercial, and industrial use of the coastal areas, and there being numerous recreational, historic,
natural and archaeological areas, the coastal water quality has become the most important asset in its coastal land use planning. Fishing and fish farming, maritime transport including shipping and port, defense (military zones), waste disposal are the
other types of diverse coastal use. Although the major bays in the country have different features and water exchange rates depending on their water body area and geomorphology, there are growing concerns about the issues of contention for the use of
shared, but limited, coastline and water body space. According to the general rules of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), before enacting and executing any endorsement, all required monitoring and analysis procedures must be implemented to identify and resolve potential conflicts of interest. This study presents the initial design
and continuing GIS development efforts at the Institute of Marine Sciences and
Technology, Dokuz Eylul University, Izmir, Turkey. The study aimed to collect and
integrate the relevant data regarding coastal zone land use, in order to underline the
basic layout of Izmir Bay and Gulluk Bay, and to quantify parameters which will then
be linked to the indicators related to the environmental concerns and management goals.
