THE PHYSICAL-MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF THE AGGREGATES FROM THE JIU RIVER AS A DEPENDING FUNCTION ON THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THEM

ABSTRACT

In the Jiu River Basin, the geography, geology and climate have an important role in the
decomposition of surface rocks, fragmentizing them and then transporting them from
their place of origin.
Water in its various forms and even the air in motion, are destructive forces in open
areas and rugged terrain, causing the main processes by which rocks disintegrate.
Rock’s fragmentation is the outcome of the loss of cohesion of mineral aggregates
under the influence of external factors. Disintegration’s speed and intensity depend on
the petrographic nature of the underlying rocks as well as on their position in relation to
climate and terrain factors.
The purpose of this paper is to present experimental data obtained in laboratory from
analysis on different sorts of aggregates collected from five gravel pits (Sadu Valley,
Iezureni, Dragutesti, Sardanesti and Ionesti) placed on the Jiu River and establish the
correlations between the physical and mechanical characteristics.
