NEW TRENDS IN UTILIZING OF SLAGS FROM IRONMAKING PROCESS

ABSTRACT
In process of pig iron production besides main product, pig iron, also secondary
products are formed, that have character of secondary raw materials and industrial
wastes. The most abundant secondary product originating in the process of pig iron
production, is blast furnace slag, its occurrence is about 300 to 500 kg for one ton of pig
iron. Blast furnace slag originates from melting of gangue parts of metal bearing
materials, slag forming additions and coke ash. Its chemical, mineralogical and physical
– chemical properties predestinate its utilisation in different fields of industry.
The paper describes progressive methods of utilizing ironmaking slags. Generally
described options of utilizing slags were tried and analyzed in Department of Ferrous
metallurgy and Foundry. The contribution deals with production of cement and cement–
less concrete mixtures, that where prepare by different blast furnace gravel and
granulated blast furnace slag. The experiments consisted of study of concrete mixture
composition, time and solidification conditions influence on strength characteristics of
concrete, that were presented by compression strength and tensile bending.
