ABSTRACT
Tin selenide SnSe was synthesized from tin and selenium powder precursors by highenergy milling in planetary ball mill. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that an orthorhombic tin selenide SnSe phase was formed already after 4 min of milling. 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy documented the values of SnSe isomer shifts corresponded to
Sn in the oxidation state II. The size and morphology of tin selenide particles were studied by specific surface area measurements, and transmission electron microscopy.
Specific surface area of tin selenides increased with increasing time of
mechanochemical synthesis. According to the transmission electron microscopy
observations mechanochemically synthesized SnSe forms crystals from 5 nm to 500 nm
with plate-like morphology. SnSe nanoparticles show a good absorption in the visible
region of UV-Vis-NIR optical spectra and they evidence indirect and direct type of
transition in the lattice.
