ABSTRACT
Collapsible lands are generally found in arid and sub arid areas. These kinds of soils that
are in metastable structure have high void ratio and low weight per unit volume. Loess
soil that are wind deposits, residual soils, soils that are formed by volcanic ashes,
alluvium soils, fine sand and silts, silt sand and loam are among the soils that have
collapsing tendency. Collapsing that happened due to the increase on the water content
of the base soil is generally seen in loosen silt layers that have low water content,
alluvium soils and in soils filled with sand and pebbles. Significant collapses may occur
in buildings constructed on these kinds of soils without any precaution when the soils
are wet.
In this study the reason of the damage in reinforced concrete storage tank with 25 000
cubic meter volume belong to Konya KOSKI (Konya Water and sewerage services) that
was constructed on collapsible soil without taking any precaution and had important
collapses in its foundation during the test filling was searched. In order to prevent the
possible future deformations in the storage tank and make it possible to use the tank
again the soil is stabilized. For this purpose, it was thought that it would be both
economic and practical to fill the foundation base of the tank with water from drainage
system and fill the volume with water gradually to stop the collapsing. The idea was
applied. There were many damages in the tank during the first usage and stabilization
with based soaking. These damages were repaired with a strengthening project and the
tank has been being used since then.
