TEMPERATURE GRADIENT IN RUBBER COATING OF A STACKER DRIVING DRUM

Conveyor belt slip on a driving drum belongs to dangerous accidents that may result in
a fire and burning of the rubber belt cover and drum coating under not well described
conditions. To prevent such situations temperature of the rubber coating is often
monitored by optical methods. We argue that these optical measurements may not
monitor the initial phase of belt slipping thoroughly enough and that they cannot predict
the incoming danger. We propose to measure continuously the temperature gradient in
the rubber coating of a stacker driving drum by a direct method that is more convenient
for the mine operational conditions.
Equipment capable to measure the temperature of moving segments of belt conveyors
(bearings and coatings of conveyor cylinders, conveyor belts) under real operational
conditions (temperature, humidity, dustiness) was designed and tested in a coal mine.
Equipment utilizes modern microcontroller technique and internal data exchange based
on the RFID method. One part of the equipment (TAG) connected with the moving
segment is maintenance-free and battery-free. Second part – supplied from distribution
network - connected with the steady construction (READER) enables collection and
evaluation of data with an option to supply data to PC or a control system.
Results of a year-long temperature testing are presented and the temperature gradient
behavior of the stacker driving drum is described. Local temperature anomalies are
shown and interpreted as an initial phase of belt slipping luckily not resulting in a fire.
