ABSTRACT

This study is about the investigation of socio-economic factors in order to enhance
preservation of prominent Basin and Lake Regions. The ongoing joint research and
development project in Kucukcekmece Basin, Istanbul, aims to implement an environmental
master plan for the region and to establish a coordination department which includes
coordination of municipality, government institutions and NGOs each other. In addition,
monitoring of the water resources within the basin is an important point of the project.
Kucukcekmece Lake and Basin which has almost 40 percent of city’s water reserves has rare
ecosystems with endangered species and also is an important historical settlement. Hadimköy
in Kucukcekmece Basin, an important town in the region that causes high pollution to the
Lake, is chosen as representative region refers to all structure of Kucukcekmece Basin in this
study. There is rapid and uncontrolled industrialization in recent years and the population of
town has increased tremendously due to migrations from all around Turkey and abroad
(Bulgaria, Romania etc.). The main purpose of the project is to find out the relationship
between society and the environment considering sustainability natural resources.
